ALEXANDRA ENGLISH l REALITY VS REALITY

"A writer by day and a collage artist by night". She is 27 years old, she was born in Australia and her name is Alexandra English.

Alexandra puts together little moments and pieces of life and the world, frozen in photographs and coexisting at each other with different realities. All the images that she uses come from old National Geographic magazines which she feels attracted because of its photography. She thinks that people read Nat Geo magazines to see what the world looks like and her amazing collages are an extension of that, they are a form of escape as she mentions, escaping any earthly location and entering a world that can only exist on the piece of paper she has in front of her. The complex world that she creates, makes us leave our complete and only reality and enter into a crazy dream where sometimes giants are protagonists and the whole universe fits into a swimming pool. But her work it is definitely more than that, it is a way of seeing the world and what people do in it.

The pictures seem to find each other and I glue them down before they can get away.

WHAT IS IT THAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

Visiting art gallery gift shops, overhearing stranger's conversations and taking them out of context, and having absolutely nothing to do.

WHAT SCARES YOU THE MOST?

Walking past windows at night.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH TO MAKE ART?

I've always been really good with scissors, I'm a magazine hoarder, and I don't mind getting glue on my hands/ clothes/ floor/ face.

WHAT IS ART?

This is something I argue with myself about in the shower and on slow buses, but still haven't come up with a proper answer. This one time I was at a rooftop gallery and saw a construction worker drop a rag. About five minutes later a crown of gallery visitors, who hadn't seen him drop it, were standing around the rag debating its value and artistic merit. It made me realize that as long as something is in a gallery, and there are enough pretentious people around, anything is art. The only thing I know for sure is that art is what you make of it, and what you do with what you make.

Favorite artist: Salvador Dali.

Alexandra is currently living in Newtown, Sydney and she is working on a commission which she said, is a huge but exciting challenge.
